The Ethanol process in the Indy Star

The Indianapolis Star had a front page story today on the food and fuel debate that has surfaced in our nation's capitol over the past few months. I'll post more on this debate soon and how some very wealthy corporations are trying to pin the blame for food inflation on ethanol production, but I wanted to call attention to an interesting photo gallery that accompanied the story.

The photographer made a trip to our newest plant, POET Biorefining Alexandria (Ind.) in conjunction with the story. Photos 1-8, and 12 are of the plant and include some great shots of corn being dropped off at the plant and the process of loading out Dakota Gold distillers dried grains with solubles.

It's fitting that the story include shots of DDGS, because they are often forgotten in the fog of the food and fuel debate. Our industry produces ethanol from the starch in the corn kernel and concentrates the fat, fiber and micro-nutrients in a high-protein animal feed - DDGS. Industry-wide, that animal feed will replace the need for 1 billion bushels of corn for animal feed.

If the photos left you wanting a complete understanding of the process of making ethanol, be sure to visit our web site.

Nathan,

Instapundit linked to a "food vs fuel" article by Bob Zubrin in the Spring edition of The New Atlantis. The article can be found here:

Zubrin is the author of Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil.

Excellent book, excellent article. Thought you might be interested.
